President Trump gave a speech from the Oval Office on Tuesday night Jan 8th, 2019. He outlined his proposal and for the need for a larger border wall on the southern border of the United States. There was a Democratic rebuttal after the speech by Nanci Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. Here is the full contents of the speech, and we will make some comments/predictions below.
President Trump was fairly smooth and on point with his speech last night. He expressed his concerns in a calm and coherent manner, not always his strong point. While he did express his crisis pitch to the American people, and he did site statistics from DHS and Border Patrol confirming his belief we need to act quickly, I felt he could have done more.
He should have take a cue from Ross Perot in the 90s and brought in a few props. It’s much easier for visual aids to sink into the minds of the American people than words. Especially dramatic looking charts showing the increased number of apprehensions and crossings that have been going on in recent years, as well as charts showing the increases in the Opioid addictions in the country, many of which are linked directly to drug trafficking through the southern border.
In addition, the speech was only about 8-9 minutes in length. Usually you want to have a slightly longer speech. Why ? Because to be honest most viewers get bored pretty quickly, and won’t be interested in the “response” from the other side. Trump’s fairly brief speech left viewers more than willing to wait and watch the response.
Overall though it got his point across. The Democrats also made a big mistake in that Pelosi and Schumer only took the time to talk about the Government shutdown. They offered very little in an alternative to the “border wall” as for border security. They focused almost entirely on the shutdown situation, and that was not what the speech was referring to, so they did a poor job with their rebuttal.
