Are you afraid of being spied on Internet ? Need to keep a low profile ? So how you can be sure you are safe ?
In the Kaspersky Cyber Security Weekend conference, Sergey Lohzkin, Senior Security Researcher, from the Global Research & Analysis Team of Kaspersky Lab, offered a number of tips for us to protect our personal data. Here is his advice to avoid someone spying you on Internet:
If you can, give up Windows.
Most spy tools are specifically designed to bypass the security systems integrated in Windows.
“The Windows operating system is among the best in the world, and I have no personal problem with this OS. The biggest problem is its popularity, which makes it a target. 99% of all spying programs were created for the Microsoft OS, and if you’re a cybercriminal, there is no point trying to infect a computer with Linux, given the multitude of programs that can be infected on Windows “explained Lohzkin.
That does not mean everyone should go on OS X, from Apple. The expert recommends using a version of Linux.
Encrypt online traffic
However, our privacy may be compromised even if encrypting the hard drive content. The websites you visit, the things you look at online, all can be used to obtain information about us. For this, the Kaspersky representative suggested some masking tools for our activity on the Internet. Tor Browser is the easiest tool of its kind, is free and available to anyone. However, the platform has made a bad name being used by drugs or arms dealers. As an alternative, you can use an Open VPN type service. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and secures the communication channels between the computer and the visited sites. No one can access these channels, and no one will be able to spy on information submitted by you on the Internet. These services are not free, as Tor, but it costs between 3 and 10 euros per month, which is not very much. ”
Get used to encrypt your files
If a hacker, for example, manages to enter your PC, it is good to know that you can prevent that the hacker would see the content of your files on the HDD. This is done by encrypting the files. There are many services that can be used to do this, but Windows operating system has preinstalled this option.
You can start using Bitcoin
Virtual currencies have gained their popularity, quite high last year, but did not come to be used by everyone. Although, we all should take into account waiving our bank account in favor of a Bitcoin wallet.
“Like Tor, the Bitcoin system has a bad reputation, being called criminals currency. However, when you are on the Internet and making purchases, even if you are protected VPN software, you still use your credit card. The sites where you shop from, can be hacked, and all of your personal data – name and address, account number, your shopping list – can be stolen. That does not happen with Bitcoin.” says Sergey.
Use a secure email service
You bother in vain to encrypt traffic and files, if your sent emails can be easily accessed by employees of companies that provide such services. Luckily there are services that provide email encryption and 100% privacy.
Chat is an open door for those trying to spy. Can you give up on chat?
Perhaps it is convenient to talk on Facebook Messenger, because all your friends are there, but you should think twice if you value your privacy. Same as emails, chat messages can be intercepted by a third party or by the company that provides your service.
Safe enough ? Or you may want to read how to delete yourself from the Internet.
