These days I had the opportunity to check out a high end tablet from Sony. We are talking about the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet model, a tablet that’s top notch from design to specifications. Until recently, I gave them no chance in this segment where Samsung, Apple and Asus (and others) rule for some time, but things can actually change.
Design and screen
This one is an 8 inch tablet, extremely thin (only 6 mm thick) and very light – having a weight of only 270 grams. The tablet’s frame is metallic, the back cover is made of a matte material that provides a good grip. It’s easy and convenient to work with one hand, and in my opinion has a completely ergonomic design.
The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact 8-inch tablet is resistant to dust and water being certified IP65 / IP68, but I do not think anyone wants to test this on their tablet. According to data from Sony, it can resist up to 1.5 meters deep in the water…
When powered on, the tablet has one of the brightest screens on the market. Superb colors, top resolution and flawless touch-screen.
Sony used the same Triluminous patented technology for the Z3 Compact tablet screen, completed by X-Reality image processor.
The colors are vivid and it has a very good contrast, on an IPS screen with 1920 x 1200 resolution. As a conclusion to the screen specifications – overnight, this one became my favorite tablet. Who has the chance to test it, will end up having the same opinion.
Specifications and performance
If we talk about a high end tablet, then we have a premium configuration.
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet has a true super-charged engine under the chassis. The processor chosen for this model is a quad-core Snapdragon 801 at 2.5 GHz, completed with 3 GB of RAM. The processor has a very good management on each core, bringing speed and stability in running any game or application, and also having pretty good battery life.
With this configuration, I do not think there is currently an Android game that would pose problems for this tablet from Sony. It’s perfect for any Android user – for gaming, productivity, even multimedia.
The limited 16 Gb internal memory can be expanded, as for any other tablet, using a micro-SD card.
Sony Xperia Tablet Z3 Compact comes complete when talking these specs. We have on it a GPS module, Bluetooth, WI-Fi and NFC.
On the Wi-Fi specs, it handles the new “ac” standard for speed allowing higher download speeds and nearly instant access to Web pages. Of course you need a router that supports the Wi-Fi “ac” standard. NFC enables the connection to other compatible devices, and is a useful feature for some users, or unnecessary for others. For example, if you have a compatible Sony TV, if you touch the remote on the back of the tablet, then what you see on tablet’s screen, you will instantly see on your TV.
If you want to know what NFC is all about, read here.
The tablet comes in two versions – one with Wi-Fi and 4G LTE, and one version having Wi-Fi but without 4G – the one I tested.
The tablet comes with Android 4.4.2 installed, but I’m sure that will receive an update to the new Android 5.0.
Interesting apps are preinstalled like Sony Walkman or PS4 remote.
Speaking of PS4, the tablet comes with a very cool feature – if you have a PS4 gaming console, you can connect the tablet to the controller – and you can play directly on the tablet screen. Mobility for gaming, right?
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet has a 2.2 MP front camera and on the rear there is an 8.1 mega pixels one.
The main 8.1 MP is very good, if we refer to other tablets. Photos taken are decent, natural colors and camera software enables face detection, HDR and panoramic photos.
The front camera is unfortunately poor, and even in good conditions, it has a very high image noise and other annoying effects.
Stereo sound is decent. It does not excel at low frequencies, but medium and high frequencies sound very well.
The tablet has a very good battery life both on paper and in reality.
Sony Xperia Z3 8 inch Compact should resist somewhere to 900 hours on standby. In conditions of daily use, the tablet has battery life for some 9 hours and 45 minutes, as tested by the guys from the Phone Arena. It has very good specifications compared to other top tablets.
As I said in the review beginning – this one has become my favorite tablet.
The screen is amazing, specifications and appearance are unbeatable, and tablet is designed to be the perfect combination of design and ergonomics.
Has some cons, but not many. I hope no customer will report problems concerning water proof or other issues.
One of the drawbacks could be the price of this tablet. We are talking about a top product bearing the Sony logo, so the tablet costs somewhere around 400 $ (the model without 4G LTE data plan ) that is almost the price of a 10.1-inch iPad Air.
If you have a consistent budget to purchase a high end tablet, I recommend you to test it- some might not be that impressed, but for some I’m sure will be worth every penny.
