Why Sony Smart Tv for 2013?
This year Sony surprised us unveiling new smart TV range for 2013.The TV sets are packed with new features like Screen Mirroring, NFC and a powerful media player.
We picked up the W650 model for our review, which is Sony’s response to Samsung’s F5500 model, launched at about the same time.
Sony 40W650 is a mid-range model, which has quite a few nice features: Wi-Fi built-in, media player for MKV files and a great stand that is capable of transforming in to a slim wall-mount.
Sony W650 Smart TV is elegant, with straight corners, slick lines and a great Sony logo with metallic finish. The upper part of the TV is really slim, and all the connections were moved to the lower part to keep it clean and simple.
When we tested the new Sony W650, we had a Samsung F5500 as comparison, sitting next to it.
The image is really good, as we tested some wild documentaries and some of the latest movie trailers in HD resolution.
The details are great and the colors are close to watch we call natural.
We also tested some SD material, and we were impressed to see that Sony does handle better those type of videos: less image noise, and less artefacts spotted compared with his rivals.
Sony 2013 Smart TV
Being a mid-range model, Sony 40W650 has a few features that surprised us:
–The new SEN (Sony Entertainment Network) loads in a few seconds, and gives access to a wide range of apps : from the popular Facebook to the live TV shows or a few attractive games.
Wi-Fi is built in for W650 model, so no cable needed to access the network.
One thing we didn’t liked: when you start SEN, you have to scroll down quite a lot trough all kind of apps to rich the internet explorer which is located at the bottom. The most used apps should be located on the upper part of the screen for easy access.
The remote control is used to scroll apps, search on Google, or post on Facebook .
There is also a mobile App created by Sony that can be used for interacting with the W650 Smart TV.
The Screen Mirroring allows you to share content. From your Android powered Smartphone (only for Android 4.2) directly on TV’s screen without cables.
This year Sony plays in the major league with a new media player for the W series ,that is able to play Avi files, MKV, MP4 and even iPhone video format .
We played some files form an external memory, as Sony W650 TV supports portable HDD’s up to 5 GB.
Most of the video files run on Sony Smart TV media player, a major improvement for 2013 models.
But despite all this, Sony’s media player integrated in W650 has some flaws:
-was not capable to recognize a USB 3.0 memory and the video files recorded on it.
-the MKV video files are played, but the audio is recognized only if the audio codec is AC3 , and on some videos we got a “ Audio codec not supported “ error ,which was also spotted by us on some Philips Smart TV models .
Overall, Sony W650 is a solid TV, with a couple of interesting features compared to its competitors.
We liked :
-the image is great
-the design and the wall mount are elegant
-the price, as we know that Sony use to be the expensive choice a few years ago
We didn’t liked:
-the media player didn’t played all of our media files (while the Samsung F5500 did the opposite a few minutes earlier)
-the arrangement of the apps in the SEN (Sony Entertainment Network) main screen.
