Great image and elegant design
This year Sony introduced a new range of upgraded TVs, from image processing to the built-in media player. The new Sony TVs come with a new image processor called X -Reality Pro which processes images very well providing very good detailing and even exceptional ones on the X9 and W9 series.
The color palette and natural shades are processed using the TRILUMINOS display innovation. Basically, we get an extensive range of shades and therefore sea water or forest green is much more realistic than what we have been accustomed to in previous years.
Internet and media player
Sony's Smart TV gamma has evolved significantly. We have a comprehensive network apps called SEN, which ranges from popular apps like Skype, Facebook or YouTube to online movie apps like AXN or FilmBox and also an improved internet browser.
As for its minuses, the browser does not support Adobe Flash and loading apps takes somewhat longer than on the competing Samsung or LG TVs. The internal Media-Player of Sony Smart TVs has undergone a radical change in 2013.
If up until these last years a Sony TV didn’t recognize an MKV movie we were trying to render from a USB memory drive, this year most series recognize this format, along with a lot of other video formats (among which we mention DivX, Mov , etc. ) that can be played from an external hard drive or USB flash drive without any problems.
We noted, however, that some flash drives with USB 3.0 standard are not recognized correctly by some Sony TVs.
NFC technology is present on the top X8 and W9 models as well, so playing a video or smartphone content directly on the TV is done by a simple touch of the remote control eliminating the need for cable.
However, if we render full- HD movies and want to benefit from high quality, Sony Smart TVs come with MHL support – HDMI’s replacement on the video player on your tablet or phone to TV.
Great sound as expected
Sound remains an asset of the Sony brand. And here comes the news: – on the X9 series we have extremely thin unset speakers, but which reproduce sound very accurately. Sony uses a technology that was initially used in the U.S. space program – Magnetic Fluid Speaker.
Even the W6 and W8 Smart TVs series keep up by integrating a system of bass reflex rear speakers that easily enhances medium and lower sounds. However, do not expect to give up your home-cinema yet.
On the 3D aspect there haven’t been any significant changes, and now Sony 3D TV supports dual play, you can play compatible games with a friend and the screen won’t be divided into two, by means of this technology each player has the complete image on the screen.
Models and features
As a range, in 2013 Sony TV models were divided into five classes:
Sony's X9 – a model which boasts with 4k resolution the highest technology from Sony.
Sony's W9 series incorporating 3D and Smart TV into a top TV.
W8 series which differs only by the image refresh rate lower than the W9 series.
W6 series which comes with built-in Internet and Wi-Fi, plus an exceptional design for an average model
Lastly the R4 series that offers basic features as well as low power consumption, a good image and a reasonable price. To be noted that the LED TVs from Sony this year come at a much lower price than the television series produced in previous years.
Basic led TV – R series
We will not say much about the R4 series, being a basic model as mentioned above. The most important thing is that we have it available in sizes ranging from 32 inch to 46 inch diagonal. The design is similar to the other series except the fact that we do not have an actually slim LED, in fact the R740 models have a considerable thickness which is very close to the LCDs in the previous years. We liked the stand very much because it can be converted into a wall support depending on your needs.
Sony W series – we become smart
The W6 Series from Sony has been reviewed by us in this article. There I tested the W650 and presented the results.
As strengths of the series we have built-in Wi -Fi and the picture clarity is improved by means of a few technologies of which we will mention MotionFlow technology and integration of the new image processor.
The largest diagonal of the series is 50 ''. As we are approaching the top we find the W8 series from Sony. This series comes with 3D technology and 400 Hz, on the rapid improvement in image clarity part MotionFlow. The rest of the features are similar to those in W6 series, only the shape of the stand reminds us that we have a higher model in front of us.
Top features for W9 series
This year’s Smart TVs W9 series models compete against the Samsung contenders series: F7000 and F8000.
On this particular series Trilumionus display technology has been introduced, which offers great quality image and colors.
We have watched a few minutes of a news report on this TV and we were really amazed. The black is extremely intense, and shades of red are extremely vivid and natural, and I think it is safe to say that this TV has one of the best images seen this year.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t do a side-by-side test with the F8000 Samsung rival. In addition an extremely stylish design, great sound and overall a TV you definitely want in your home. The largest available diagonal for W9 Sony is 55 ‘‘.
Sony reveals it's on 4k screen
I have left the best for last, the flagship, the 4k resolution model called x9005A available in 55” and 65” diagonals.
Rendering a piece, at such a high resolution, improved with existent technologies offers an unforgettable experience.
Although expensive and extravagant as most 4k models, the X9005 shows that Sony can still produce top performance and design.
We must end here. We can safely say that Sony is on the right track. Although not as popular as a few years ago, the giant has recovered and returned with a more acceptable price range, a capable USB media player and a unique design. Although, Sony’s 2013 TV range has some minuses they are a good alternative to those who are tired to listen to the people’s voice that guides us towards Samsung.
