It’s about midway through the NBA season, so let’s take a look at who’s on top in the NBA standings, and who are in contention, and who have been a disappointment so far. A lot of people were picking the Golden State Warriors and the Boston Celtics as the favorites coming into this year, but both teams have been a mild disappointment so far.
The Celtics are currently 5th in the Eastern conference with a record of 25 wins and 16 losses, but they needed to win 7 out of their last 10 games just to get there, after a shaky start. The 76ers are in 4th place and sitting in pretty good position at this point for a late season run.
The NBA standings at the midway point find 2 surprising teams at the top.
The Milwaukee Bucks are leading the Eastern conference, led by their rising star Giannis Antetokounmpo (and good luck pronouncing that one!). The 24 year old 6′ 11″ star is averaging 26 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists per game, and is the odds on favorite to win the MVP title. Let’s see if he can deliver in the playoffs !
The Toronto Raptors at 31 wins and 12 losses are right behind the Bucks, and they are a factor. The surprising Indiana Pacers are in 3rd place at this time in the NBA standings. The eastern conference playoffs will be wide open and we expect many series to go the distance.
In the Western conference we see another surprise team at the top, the Denver Nuggets. With a record of 28 wins and 12 losses the Nuggets are a couple of games ahead of Steph Curry’s Warriors in the NBA standings. The Warriors are 2nd in the Western Conference but 2nd for them is a mild disappointment. This is the team that has won 3 of the last 4 NBA titles, and their record is 27 wins and 14 losses. We are used to seeing this team with 14 losses much later in the season normally.
However you have to consider the Warriors still the favorite to win the NBA title considering their amazing success the past 4 years. They have the confidence and the coaching to make another run in the playoffs.
The Nuggets are led by their 28 year old 6′ 6″ guard Will Barton who is averaging over 16 points per game and is an excellent play maker. The Lakers and their superstar addition LeBron James find themselves on the brink of being out of the playoffs. An inconsistent season so far finds them at 23 wins and 19 losses and in 8th place in the NBA standings. James is having another great year though, averaging 27 points, 7 assists and 8 rebounds per game.
After a slow start perennial powerhouses Houston and San Antonio have come back strong and are sitting in 6th and 7th place. It should be a wild finish and we’ll come back to take a look at things at a later date, as well as with our playoff predictions in a future post.
