In February of 2016 a new Windows smartphone was released, the Microsoft Lumia 650, which offers a simple and beautiful design along with some basic technical features. The Windows 10 OS for mobiles does not enjoy much attention from manufacturers, which is one of the reasons why Microsoft remains the main provider, through the Lumia series, purchased from Nokia.
The newest model is the Microsoft Lumia 650, which mostly, respects the tradition implemented by the Americans in this range, with a product that provides an improved price/value factor. Even if it has some software shortcomings, which we will explain below, Lumia 650 may be one of the best choices, if you are among those who want a phone with Windows 10.
If there is something that does not surprise us at Lumia 650, then that thing is the design. It largely retains the line adopted by Nokia and subsequently by Microsoft and maintains the simple and elegant look. The case is made of plastic, but the novelty of this price segment is the aluminum frames, which contribute to a more solid construction. The back cover can be replaced and provides access to the battery while the dimensions are proper: 142 x 70.9 x 6.9 mm.
The great length of the phone is due not only generous margins, but especially to a AMOLED screen with a 5 “diagonal. Basically, Microsoft once again confirms the trend of launching large-screen phones regardless of price, and the one on Lumia 650 has the HD resolution (1280 × 720 pixels) is a ClearBlack type and is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.
Talking about the hardware platform, Microsoft has opted for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 chipset with a quad-core Cortex A7 processor clocked at 1.3 GHz. Basically, it’s a Basic range chipset from Qualcomm, and we would have expected to see it only on the Lumia 4xx, and 5xx series, not on a model such as 650 for which a Snapdragon 4xx chipset would be more appropriate. The phone features 1 GB RAM and the internal memory has reached 16 GB and can be expanded with microSD cards, while on connectivity – we notice the presence of 3G, having download speeds up to 43 Mbps while 4G reaches up to 150 Mbps. Other features would be: Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, Wi-Fi b/ g / n and GPS receiver compatible with various systems including Glonass (Russia), and Beidou (India).
Talking about the cam, Microsoft has opted for a size ¼ ” 8 MP sensor and f / 2.2 aperture which, because of the limitations of the chipset, records video in HD. If you are selfie passionate you have the front camera of 5 MP available which is also filming in HD. As I said, the battery can be replaced and has a capacity of 2,000 mAh, large enough to provide a range of about a day, especially that the hardware will not consume much resources.
In terms of software, the Lumia 650 uses the Windows 10 OS, appreciated by those who want an experience close to laptops and computers. However, the OS on Lumia 650 is deprived of the Continuum function, which allows you to project images from your phone to a bigger screen (laptop, monitor) via an adapter. The number and the quality of applications available on Windows 10 remain significant obstacles to the growth of popularity of this platform.
Should we buy this smartphone or not?
The decision depends on your love for the Windows 10 operating system. If you are a big fan, then yes this smartphone may deserve to be included on your list of options, especially it has a sleek design with metal frame, suitable camera segment and removable battery.
The hardware platform could be slightly better, but on the other hand Windows 10 needs relatively small resources, which is why Snapdragon 212 should be strong enough for most users. In addition, the phone will be available later in the dual-SIM version.
Microsoft Lumia 650 is available for sale from February 18th.
For what it offers, the price is quite high compared to Android phones in the same range. One of the best examples is the Samsung Galaxy J5, which is a little cheaper and comes with Snapdragon 415, 1.5 GB RAM and 13MP camera. Alternatively there are also Sony M4 Aqua, which costs only slightly more, but it has Snapdragon 615, 2GB RAM and a 13MP camera.
