The Government shutdown is into it’s second week, and it could still go on for quite some time. 25% of the government is not functioning or is shutdown at this point. There is an upside to the government shutdown if you are looking to visit the national parks though. If you can deal with overflowing trash cans and a general lack of cleanliness, you can walk right into the parks without paying a fee.
Nobody is collecting fees right now. Nobody is at the gates. There are no park rangers inside for the most part, just a few emergency personnel. The restrooms are also locked up, so if you have to go, it’s gonna be like the old days…..the REALLY old days…..lol
So take the family and enjoy the views for free ! And by the way there are volunteers at most of the parks attempting to help with the cleanliness problems going on, and our thanks to all of you !
As for the government shutdown, how long might it last ? This one could go on, as President Trump has responded to criticism by his conservative base, in particular Anne Coulter and Rush Limbaugh, who were all but demanding that he stand firm on his campaign promise to build a lengthy wall across the southern border of the United States. He altered course and refused to sign a non-border wall deal a couple of weeks ago under criticism from the far right. It would seem highly unlikely that he will sign a non-border wall deal at this point, or face double the previous wrath of the conservative right.
What about the Democrats ? Will they be willing to give more than the 1.3 to 1.6 billion offered for non-border wall security ? Nancy Pelosi is trying to secure her speakership, and until that is finalized, she has to be careful of the progressive far left turning against her. Therefore she is probably NOT willing to compromise herself until she is secured as the new speaker of the house. Therefore the government shutdown could last awhile longer.
Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer seems more willing to cut a deal with Trump than Pelosi at this time. All leaks seem to point to that fact. So it’s Pelosi that is holding things up at this point for the most part. There is 115 or so miles of new border wall set to begin construction in late January in Texas. There has been about 40-50 miles of new border wall construction already, as well as a tremendous amount of reinforcing/replacing of older fencing all along the southern border.
It will be interesting to see who blinks first in the government shutdown in the coming days or weeks. Of course it will be spun to indicate otherwise by whoever caves in first…..lol. In the meantime, take the family for FREE and go visit a national park !
