The government shutdown ends. Well the longest government shutdown in history is finally over after 35 days. No agreement has been reached on Trump’s border wall request. What happens now ? Let’s take a look at some possibilities in this post.
With the Democrats not giving an inch, Trump was facing mounting pressure due to security risks at the airports. When enough TSA agents called in sick and risk was rising, Trump agreed to reopen the government, I’m sure not wanting a potential air catastrophe to occur which would have been a disaster for all involved.
As the government shutdown ends, the pressure switches back to Nancy Pelosi. She is on record as saying that she would negotiate a deal on border security once the government reopened. She is also on record as saying she will allow the state of the union address in the House chamber once the government was open. Both of those things now need to occur, and the pressure will begin to mount on Pelosi, as this fight is far from over.
Trump claims he will shutdown the government again on February 15th if a deal can’t be struck, but that will never occur due to political pressure, nobody wants to go through this again. Therefore is there will not be another government shutdown, and a deal can’t be reached that gives Trump at least a couple of billion for additional border wall funding, it appears more likely that Trump will declare a national emergency and battle this out all the way to the Supreme Court.
With prior national emergencies being successful over the swine flu which killed 12 people, it seems with a conservative majority in the Supreme Court, that Trump has a decent chance of being successful in the end if he declares a national emergency. There is a chance for negotiations to be successful with the Democrats, but the extreme wings of both parties make it less and less likely.
