Which is the best TV to buy? Which are the best quality TVs? Which brand of TV should you choose? Samsung, Sony, LG ,Sharp, Phillips or something else?
These are some questions which are frequently asked by anyone who wants to equip their home with a last gen TV with the latest technologies inside.
In this article we will talk about the best TV that you can buy or rather how to choose the right tv in 2014. We will also discuss the strong points and weaknesses of each manufacturer.
I will not talk much about Led vs Lcd , or about Led vs Plasma or Led vs Oled.
There are dozens of articles on the internet which explain what a LED, LCD or plasma TV is and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of technology.
It is clear however that LCD TVs with Led illumination (improperly called Led Tv’s) currently dominate the TV market.
Plasma TVs have ended up in obscurity once Panasonic ( a top producer) and most recently Samsung stopped manufacturing them.
Conventional CCFL illuminated LCDs aren’t manufactured anymore.
As for OLED TVs, they maintain their high prices and the regular consumer cannot easily purchase such a Tv.
So the Led illuminated Lcd Tv is still currently the most popular and most purchased TV compared to the other types of TV. As for the Smart or 3D Led TV it is up to you to decide if you will use these technologies.
Smart TVs are used by most customers as regular TVs without making use of their apps and features offered by these models mainly because they are difficult to use and the work speed (especially for Smart apps) is rather week.
Basically you buy a Smart TV if you want to see some videos on YouTube without turning on the PC, or want to read news online or watch television online with a subscription. You can also see your friends on Facebook or have a conversation on Skype, but otherwise you can’t do sensational things with it.
As for 3D TVs it all depends on how much you like movies and the time you have available. Many of the 3D TV owners barely watch 1-2 movies per month and usually when they have guests over or when the entire family is home. But if you would rather go out for a 3D movie at the cinema then stay at home, then a 3D TV is not for you.
Now the bad news ! Usually the best TVs (image and sound) come with Smart and 3D features included in the package. You cannot choose just one part you have to take the whole package even if you don’t use those options. If you want a regular TV then you have the best chances to buy an average TV.
1. Best image of 2014? Winner Sony
Look at some photos below taken when running a sample image on the Tv models: Sony 42W706, Sony 42W705, Philips 48PFH5509, LG 42LB650, Samsung 40H6400 and Samsung 40F8000.
If we speak about colour tones, colour palette and in fact the video processing which adjust the image , then the winner is clearly Sony, in fact its TVs.
Although the Sony W706 series is your average Led Tv, it managed to show better image quality without intermission in the display range of colours and tones accurately (see circled areas on the photo) against some top models from Samsung namely 40F8000.
Tests were done with high resolution images, where we checked the colour balance and the blacks and shades palette rendered.
So if you want the best image on a TV in 2014 and you are not interested in anything other than having an exceptional quality in playback a Sony Led TV is the right choice.
2. Which brand offers the best and fastest Smart TVs in 2014? Winner Samsung
We tested the internet and apps on Smart TVs from Sony, LG, Philips and Samsung. Sony hasn’t really displayed its features in this segment, most models running their applications in a mediocre way lacking a powerful processor and a more optimized platform.
Philips vaguely copied the Web OS from LG but failed and using it as a Smart TV mainly leads to lags rather than coherence.
Although LG had announced this year the Smart TV with Web OS revolution it only disappointed its customers (or maybe just me) with a heavy operating system that affected even the menus of the TVs, loaded with animations that don’t help in any way for a faster more effective usage of online apps and Web browsing.
Though Samsung is not perfect either, year after year they have optimized their apps, redesigned menus and increased the processing performance of their TVs. Applications are running a little faster, the internet browser deals well with multiple pages and on the interaction part they have introduced a clone of the Magic Remote from Lg , wich is perfect for controlling your Smart Tv.
Sony is no match for Lg and Samsung ( a Big No for Smart Tv control ) because they don’t support regular keyboards and mouse and they also don’t have Android and iOS apps especially for interacting with the Smart TV as its competitors.
3. Which is the best 3D TV in 2014?
Regarding this aspect is difficult to decide a winner and opinions are divided and it is best to test before you buy.
Some prefer Samsung and Sony with their active glasses which accurately render high-resolution 3D images but on the other hand some say that LG and Philips ( passive 3D ) give a flicker-free 3D image and even a more restful one using passive glasses.
Philips has also introduced active 3D on some models like 40PFS6909 .
Besides the points mentioned above it only remains for each to decide based on their own subjective opinion because…. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some will agree with what I said and others will not. In the end the best 2014 Led Tv for you is the one that you like and nothing will change that. Enjoy!
