GPS navigators have not yet been replaced by smartphones. These are still very useful for those who travel often or who have a job driving a cab or as a carrier. The phone is not really helpful, especially as jams occur, interruptions or other problems.
We’ll talk today about Garmin car GPS navigators available in 2016 and we made a selection with the best equipment in terms of the price-quality ratio.
Garmin now offers free map updates ( see how to install them here ), so we know that we will always have the latest maps and corrections, to have an optimal route every time.
Most of Garmin’s satnavs are similar as interface, yet some of them have additional options, that may be indispensable in some cases.
The first satnav that I noticed is the Garmin Nuvi 55LM.
It is a basic model with a diagonal of 5 inches that is priced under 100$. The screen is quite bright and touch-screen works flawlessly.
It comes preloaded with maps of the 49 states and is simple to use. We put in address and zip code, and it will generate an optimal route in a few tens of seconds. It has few options for generating a track: fast or short.
The maps have free updates and the point of interest database is quite generous.
In the proximity of an intersection the Junction View function turns up, a function that shows a magnified image so we can more easily choose and selecting the correct lane.
Overall it is a very good GPS, easy to use and robust. If we had to we find its biggest downside, it would be the lack of route planning by adding multiple destinations. Basically you can just create a route from point A to point B.
The next Garmin satnav that I chose is more advanced- Nuvi 2757LM
It stands out by its very large 7 inch screen. Thus, information becomes easily readable especially for drivers of trucks or large vehicles, where a 5 inch GPS would generate an extra effort, when we look at the route to take.
This model is not only more efficient due to a larger screen. Garmin Nuvi 2757 comes with Real Voice – a premium option that provides extended voice guidance. Besides classic instructions it tells you about: street names, road signs and other details of traffic, and you don’t need to pay attention to the information on the screen.
Another important function is voice warning for lane change. Thus we are sure that we didn’t place ourselves wrong for changing direction. It also allows you to create more complex routes, with multiple waypoints – basically, we can plan a route with several stops quite easy.
Garmin Nuvi 2757 GPS is more expensive, but worth every dollar spent. The perfect diagonal for any viewer and the additional functions, make it a perfect companion for any driver.
The third Garmin car navigator model presented here is NuviCam LMTHD 6.
This satnav is more than that, it has an integrated video camera recording traffic events. It is much more dedicated to our safety.
As a GPS it has a 6-inch diagonal, maybe not the largest as the model presented above, but enough for most drivers.
The screen is very bright, even when sunlight is directed towards it. Another strong point of this model is the glass capacitive display enabling smartphone like gesture control: pinch, zoom in, zoom out, these are easily selected on this type of screen, compared to a GPS with standard screen.
It also has integrated the HD Traffic function that allows receiving information on traffic congestion or accidents that complicate the travel, and helps us to configure a better route, in order to not get stuck in traffic.
Another specific feature to this model is Premium Driver Awareness. This premium system helps us to drive safer, and ensures that we keep the distance from the vehicle in front and that we do not leave the correct lane. It is to be appreciated, this set of functions that can help us avoid an accident.
Like on the other models, the maps have free lifetime updates.
We now move to the integrated video camera. It continuously records and stores instant footage in case of impact. Camera quality is very good, it records in HD format at excellent quality.
Garmin NuviCam LMTHD 6 has a high price, but it is a complex gadget, dedicated not only to ensure an optimal route for our journey. It help us to avoid critical situations and to demonstrate in case of an accident how the collision really happened. For those who travel often, I think these are functions they can’t travel without.
What model fits you ?
Garmin certainly has a more varied range of car navigators, but I felt that these are some of the most representative models for several categories of drivers, and that offer features truly useful for a more carefree travel. For those who already own a Garmin satnav you can read about updating maps for free with these methods.
