Be On Road for iPhone is a relatively new gps software that comes in two versions: free and paid.
The navigation software for iPhone uses Navteq maps in the paid version and in the free version we have available OSM(Open Street Maps )maps. The maps are constantly being updated and corrected with the aid of users throughout the world.
After the installation of Be On the Road gps app from Market, you can download the desired map of your choice and you can also combine paid maps with free ones.
Be On Road for iPhone surprises us with improved graphics, an accurate color palette and it is easy to read.
At the bottom of the screen we have the current time displayed, the access menu button and on the left a customizable button that can display speed, altitude or other info.
We also have a quick on-screen settings button where we can choose how to display the map (2D/3D), route display or various options regarding the maps.
For map display we can choose between several colour schemes and the points of interest are shown on the map in the form of blue icons as on Google earth. 3D buildings are always present on the map screen and are rendered correctly without impeding route visibility.
The main menu resembles that of Windows Phone 8 in terms of icons and colour scheme. We can choose a destination based on an address, a point of interest and we can also set a default location for home or work.
Finding addresses is achieved by searching in a single box, where we enter location, street, etc. This type of search can sometimes cause errors in the results shown.
Route calculation is done quickly and the routes chosen are generally correct, within the limits of the information provided by maps. For Open Street maps it is possible to have a small percentage of errors which is normal for free maps.
A number of additional features are also available in Be-On-Road app for iPhone:
Weather forecast which is an especially useful feature on holiday trips, live traffic information that can cover an entire region and a currency converter included in the menu.
On setting the route, this iPhone gps app comes with car mode, pedestrian mode and a most unique setting: helicopter routing … that I have not tried.
We also liked the fact that Be-On-Road has a route recording feature, which is sought by those who perform deliveries, etc. As for alerts, Be-On-Road announces when you are exceeding speed limit and also includes alerts associated with custom POI.
In addition, we like Be-On-Road because of the colours chosen for the map, well done graphics, free maps from OSM and the possibility of recording the route.
We don’t like Be-on-road for iPhone because of lack of simulation of the route, the absence of integration with social networks, and we also don’t like the absence of an optimal or economical routing mode in addition to the two basic ones (fast and short).
