By now most of us in the tech world have hear of Virtual Reality. Some of us have also heard of Augmented Reality too, although not nearly as well known as VR. But let’s not forget the new Mixed Reality, which could take the world by storm in the coming years.
There is certainly a lot to be aware of in these various worlds. Technology is moving very rapidly and it’s quite often hard to keep track of what is really going on. We will try to clear some of the confusion up with this article.
Augmented reality and mixed reality can sometimes get mixed up. The various products within each category are evolving quickly. Augmented reality is considered to be a digital overlay of information onto the real world. We saw this last year with Google Glass, the not-as-successful-as-hoped wearable headset from Google. These were able to show live data from the real world in real time. We may see many good and practical uses for Augmented reality in the coming years, but for now mixed reality and virtual reality have taken the limelight away.
What about Mixed reality ? This term refers to virtual objects that can be projected onto the real world. The wildly popular Pokémon Go was the first wildly successful app that actually was using basic Mixed Reality technology. In this game, the Pokémon is a virtual object that is laid onto a real world backdrop.
There are only simple basic examples of Mixed Reality today, but the future for this technology is bright. 2 of the biggest that are coming our way would be
Google’s Magic Leap and
Microsoft’s Hololens. If you are not familiar with this technology, please click on the previous 2 links to see what this is all about. Google and Microsoft have some amazing technology coming our way.
AR and MR are more targeted towards the near future, but Virtual Reality is blossoming fast today. Virtual reality headsets use computers to create a virtual world in real-time. The headsets are mounted over your eyes to immerse you in the action. There are a lot of different types of virtual reality headsets on the market today like cardboard VR sets that transform your phone into a headset.
High quality sets like PlayStation VR or the Oculus Rift are state-of-the-art VR. Virtual reality offers a huge amount of apps and games and experiences for you to enjoy right now.
