I was talking in a previous article about the 2015 Sony TVs, which come with Android, as the operating system for their Smart TV function. We recently had the opportunity to play with the Sony KDL43W756CS model, a TV from the midrange line of this year. It is a Smart TV with a very good image, and unlike some years ago, when a Sony TV used to cost a little more than a competition model, its price is very good compared to the 2015 models of Samsung or LG.
Design and connections
The changes in design are not visible. Framing and table stand lines, have the same shape that Sony has accustomed us with, since 2014 on models like 40W705. The color tone chosen for this model – is a light matte silver and the stand is made of a single metal piece shiny finished.
TV is less depth at the top and a narrow on the lower side. The lower back is a bit more prominent, we have placed there all the TV components and connections of this model.
We have enough connections, like: 4 x HDMI, 3 x USB 2.0, CI +, optical audio, headphone jack and the most important components. It also features DVB-C, DVB-T and T2 tuners. (So demanded lately).
Image and sound
Sony 43W756CS does not disappoint, image quality is one of the manufacturer strengths for many years. This Smart TV has a resolution of 1920 x 1080p, enough for the 43 inch diagonal.
Using the same X Reality Pro processor for image processing, this model manages to provide exceptional playback, especially when it comes to HD or Full HD materials. The obtained black level is very good, and well distributed, both to the center and the edges of the screen.
It’s pretty bright, perhaps brighter than some models from Samsung and Philips, so is suitable to bright living rooms, where viewing quality remains the same.
The colors are vivid enough, and color depth is superior, the number of colors is large enough to not cause disruption in the gradation of displayed images. The rating for this model’s image is the maximum, when comparing it with other rivals TVs, in the same class price. It also processes the images using Motionflow XR 800, reducing blur in videos.
The sound is played through two 10 W speakers, no change from last year regarding this chapter. My opinion is that you can’t get cinema sound from this model, without a sound bar or home-cinema. It is ok for talk shows or news, voices are rendered very clear and with flawless sound.
Smart TV with Android
This is the icing on the cake. Sony introduced the Android operating system on certain models, in 2015. Thus, a Smart TV which did not offer much in previous years, was reborn.
The interface is specific to Sony, the menu is slightly awkward.
The search bar at the top works like a mini search engine and allows us to look for movies, trailers, videos and similar material. Scrolling down, we can choose between custom applications for Sony Smart TVs, games, utilities and other categories.
We can also access Google Play, Google Music and Google Games. There are available popular applications as VLC, or Kmplayer to play video, games like Asphalt and Bomber, and the similar stuff.
Youtube is incredibly fast running under Android TV, clips are loading instantly, video quality is outstanding.
What didn’t I found on Sony 43W756C, with Android?
I didn’t found something very important – a web browser. You will say that is not possible, how not to have a browser on a Smart TV especially one of 2015, with Android? It is possible. Even Sony mentions this, there is no preinstalled browser, but Opera can be installed, or other utility accessing apps bundles on Google Play as shown in the images below.
Unfortunately, on the model we tested, we did not find any web browser application available in Google Play. I did update to the latest version of the software but nothing was solved.
It’s probably a bug that will be fixed in the next software update, but the fact is that at this time there can’t be installed Opera on a Sony Smart TV. It is a big minus for this type of TV, and drastically reduces its functionality.
On 07/15/2015 , Sony brought a new update that made the Opera browser available ( installed) on Android main menu ( next to other Google icons) . Now we have a full Android Tv set, capable of surfing the web.
Sony’s Smart TV 43W756CS seems to be the ideal TV model for those who want to have both a quality picture, and a Smart TV capable of running the same applications that we are used with, on our smartphone or tablet. This Smart TV has several features, also has the brand image quality we are used with, completing with Android OS its specifications.
Price is another advantage of this model as said above, Sony has risked and has also learned from the past years, releasing an outstanding TV set without requiring a hefty price in an increasingly cautious consumer market.
