If you are looking for a higher end Drone you may want to consider 3D Robotics, makers of the Solo Drone. This unit goes for about $800 as of this post, but it’s money well spent if you are into high quality drones. This unit will cost you about $350-450 more than the Protocol Galileo Drone reviewed in an earlier post, depending upon location and current pricing.
Using the Solo’s smart flying features will take you off the sidelines and you can be a part of capturing the memories you want. You can choose from a variety of autopilot modes, from pre-mapped flight paths, to orbit, lock-on-and-follow, and more. This unit allows you to not worry about keeping your drone in the air, and let’s you focus on taking amazing footage to share with your friends and family.
Some of the more amazing features of the 3DR Solo Drone:
Real-time, first-person view of your flight, allows you to connect your compatible device to the remote controller via HDMI; the Solo app lets you see what the camera (sold separately) sees in high definition to set up and take footage during the flight.
It’s compatible with GoPro HERO3, HERO3+ and HERO4 action cameras. The 3-axis Solo gimbal (sold separately) keeps your GoPro camera stable in flight, and lets you start and stop videos and take pictures with the push of a button. You can control both drone and camera with 1 remote controller.
You can automatically take off, hover, return home and land with the push of a button. An HDMI port, smartphone mount, and camera controls keep you in command of flight and footage all at once. This unit allows you to save footage directly to your phone, and has the ability to start and stop recording during flight, so you can reduce unwanted footage, making it easier to edit, and saving storage space on your smartphone.
This drone has automated camera control for cinematic shots, Smart Shots presets, including orbit, lock-on-and-follow, and pan, allow you to capture footage hands-free while the drone flies from point A to B on a virtual cable you’ve mapped out. You can simulate flights before you fly, and it has a built-in flight simulator that lets you safely learn how to fly before taking to the sky in the real world.
The 3DR Sold Drone has up to 20 minutes of flight time per charge, and the removable lithium-polymer battery provides up to 25 minutes of flight time without the gimbal and camera attached. The display indicates battery status in flight. This is a super high-quality, high-end drone that is well worth $800 in our humble opinion !
