It’s July 2018, and we are wondering about the future of televisions today. Most people would agree that the big 4 televisions manufacturers are LG, Samsung, Sony, and Panasonic. So we should follow their clues as to the future. Certainly one of the things we have seen from LG the past couple of years is that the future of televisions is becoming shockingly THIN !
Already we have seen a 65 inch LG Signature OLED TV being just 2.57 millimeters thin. This is about 1/3 the width of an iPhone by comparison. These get mounted to the wall with magnets which is very impressive. We will continue to see the major manufacturers condensing the thickness of their offerings, this trend is not done yet.
The thinner televisions in the future will for now need OLED technology (organic light-emitting diode). These types of televisions can provide significantly better pictures. They have pixels that only light up or get dark. So they don’t require a backlight as an LED or LCD tv would. This allows for them to be created so thin.
LG has been dominating the OLED space, but we should see more manufacturers entering this space. This should be good for consumers as the future of televisions should see a decrease in price for high end televisions. We should also see the speakers on televisions continue to shrink and eventually disappear completely from view.
Samsung has created their QLED technology (Q is for quantum dot). It will compete with OLED technology. Samsung also has begun rolling out their Lifestyle TVs. The future of televisions may look a lot like your furniture. These Samsung televisions look a lot like a framed picture as opposed to a regular television. These will work just like regular televisions, but when they are off they will display family photos or artwork, blending into your family or living room. The Samsung Serif is a collaboration with MoMA that will make it appear that your living room has mid-century modern furniture as opposed to a state-of-the-art television.
We will keep an eye on the future of televisions and keep you posted with the newest trends. Please take a look at more
